Pelvic Care: Postpartum Recovery and Care

On the blog Womb Home Planet, Heart Medicine for Cyclic Being, a person holds a skeletal figure of the pelvic floor before their pelvis.

My Postpartum Healing Journey

After several hours of laboring at home, I remember my body signaling to pee. I went to the bathroom, and when I went to release, a sharp pain traveled through my vaginal canal and my pelvic floor, and with it, the fear of childbirth took over my psyche. The pain was jarring, and instead of speaking out, I held it in; I held my pelvic floor in fear of the pain.

In hindsight, I know that if I had told my doula or midwife of my experience on the toilet,  they could have mentally helped me move through the pain and release the tension in my pelvic floor. Maybe my birth wouldn’t have lasted three days and ended with pushing on my back in the hospital. (Ahh, yes, the shoulda, coulda, woulda of life, takes a deep breath, I love you and see you, and I did my best in that moment).

My birth journey kicked off the very intimate and ongoing journey I have with my pelvic floor. I realized how long, before the pregnancy and labor, I was clenching and holding in my pelvic floor, how unsafe and fearful I was in my own body. From chronic pain that made me feel unsafe in my own body to pain-free living when I am intentional about the way I show up for my body, in this blog, I plan to share with you the resources and healing modalities that support my pelvic floor.

Pelvic Throat and Feet Connection

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles situated at the bottom of the pelvis. Attached to the sitting bones, pubic bones, and tailbone, these muscles hold the abdominal organs in and up. Your pelvic floor also makes up the vulva and anus and manages urination, defecation, and sexual activities. When something is out of balance in our pelvic floor, it can interrupt and off-balance both the bottom half of your body: legs, hips, and feet, as well as the top of the body: torso, shoulders, neck, and head.

The Pelvic Throat Connection

In my studies as a birth worker, we are taught how to support birthing people by tapping into their voices to open the pelvic floor. Opening the throat to make sounds like “ahhh” and “oohh” and using the sound’s energy has been shown to relax and open the pelvic floor and move along the labor.

Even outside of childbirth, I have used my voice and the voices of my clients as an instrument for sound healing to move stuck energy in the pelvic floor during womb healing ceremonies. Sound therapy also helps regulate the nervous system and permits our bodies to release tension.

I have noticed, even during sexual intimacy with myself or my lovers, that creating a safe erotic space to be expressive and extra with my moans awakens my capacity for receiving pleasure.

The Pelvic Foot Connection

Both the pelvic floor and the feet are correlated with the root chakra. Our root chakra governs safety, security, and grounding, as well as being connected to the earth, our relationship with fear, being present in the moment, and stability. “In Ayurveda, the feet are considered the ‘wings of the womb’ because so many of the energy channels in the feet trace back to the pelvis (Dinsmore-Tuli, Yoni Shakti).”

Taking care of our feet is deeply nourishing for people with wombs and can preserve our yin energy; here are my go-to practices for pelvic care and yin preservation:

  • Foot massage before bed
  • Rolling your feet on a tennis ball or massage ball
  • Warm Foot Soak with magnesium, Sandalwood Essential oil, and White flowers

Pelvic Recovery Practices

Here are some other Pelvic floor recovery practices that have been integral to my healing journey!

See a Pelvic Floor Therapist

A Denver Pelvic Floor Therapist that I recommend is Rachel Ohana of Liberate Pelvic Care. A P.T. can offer a deeper diagnosis and healing plan for you and your pelvic floor needs. https://www.liberatepelvichealth.com/

Pilates and Yoga

Pilates was my next step to recovery after seeing a pelvic therapist. Reformer Pilates can be pricey; however, after a few months of attending classes, I strengthened my core, hips, and thighs, which helped release tension from the pelvic floor.

Yoga is another option, and Leslie Howard’s book Pelvic Liberation is a great resource for using yoga as a healing modality for pelvic health. Check out my monthly Yoni Yoga Classes for a yogalates fusion class!

Pelvic Floor Wands

A pelvic physical therapist created Pelvic Floor wands to massage the pelvic floor muscles to relieve minor aches and pains, including the most deep and hard-to-reach obturator internus and puborectalis muscles.

Yoni Steaming and Breathwork

Yoni steaming can support the pelvic floor through heat therapy, which can help relax the pelvic floor. Our breath is connected with our pelvic floor. When we inhale and our diaphragm drops, so does our pelvic floor. As we exhale and our diaphragm rises, so does the pelvic floor. Breathing deeply and intentionally while relaxing and flexing the kegel muscles can be a healing modality that supports the pelvic floor muscles.

Tibetan Cranial

Earlier, I spoke about the throat chakra and pelvic floor connection, which is why Tibetan cranial work is recommended to support and balance any problems in the upper body due to pelvic imbalance.  Tibetan Cranial is an ancient healing art rooted in 3,000 years of Tibetan tradition. Beverly Castaneda of Humming Bird Sacred Smoke offers this powerful practice, which has the potential to alleviate a range of conditions, including neck and back pain, headaches, traumatic brain injuries, jaw tension, hormonal imbalances, and sleep disorders.

For those dealing with TMJ syndrome, jaw tension, or teeth grinding, Tibetan Cranial may provide lasting and effective relief.

Can someone have postpartum after a hysterectomy? Is there hope for womb healing after having the girly parts have been removed.?

Postpartum is a lifetime and womb healing is always possible! Even without the physical womb present the energy of the womb can still be felt and honored in your healing journey.
