Strengthening Black Maternal Health Through Collective Action & Advocacy

What is Black Maternal Health Week 

In 2018, the Black Mamas Matter Alliance created Black Maternal Health Week. The campaign, held each year from April 11th to April 18th, aims to build awareness, activism, and community building for & around Black birthing people.

Historically, black people have faced systemic barriers to basic needs and the ability to thrive due to the history of slavery and the racialized politics upon which this country is built. These barriers affect black birthing people by limiting their access to critical reproductive health care. Black Women and birthing people deserve access to safe and healthy pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care, and culturally and community-based care is one of the most critical ways that black people access that care. Black Maternal Health Week uplifts the voices of midwifery, mutual aid, and birth justice by building awareness and collective action.

Action and Advocacy

This year’s theme is “Healing Legacies: Stengthening Black Maternal Health through Action and Advocacy.” This theme intends to highlight black-led organizations leading the charge to transform the care and support black people get during this sacred time of their lives.
